PHOTOGRAPHERS WORTH LOOKING AT

I am often asked for names of photographers in particular areas of photography. This list contains important photographers with a very brief description. It is intended as a starting point for photography courses and personal investigations. I have tried to include photographers with easily available information. Information is available from sites on the links page.

B/W= Mainly black and white. COL= mainly colour
LAND= Landscape photographers. STILL= still life.
P= people. N= nude.
W= war. DOC= Documentary.

Adams, Ansel
American, 1902-1984

B/W LAND P
One of the most important photographers of all, his purist black and white work has been much acclaimed. His importance in establishing photography as a fine art cannot be overestimated. Ansel Adams established precise means of working to produce prints of the finest quality. To this end he worked with the zone system of exposure control. He was also part of the f64 group. He founded the Sierra club, which influenced in developing the national parks of America.

Arnold, Eve
American 1913-

Eve Arnold was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of immigrant Russian parents. She began photographing in New York City in 1946. Mrs. Arnold first became associated with Magnum Photos in 1951, becoming a full member in 1955. She was based in America during the 1950s and came to England in 1962.

Atget, Eugene
French, 1857-1927

Jean Eugene Auguste Atget, among the first of photography's social documenters, has come to be regarded as one of the medium's major figures. His images of Paris are perhaps the most vivid record of a city ever made. He made over 10,000 photographs of Paris. He photographed scenes, street characters: peddlers, garbage collectors, and road workers.

Blossfeldt, Karl
German 1865-1932

Karl Blossfeldt photographed plants in close up for 30 years. He photographed leaves, seedpods, stems, and other plant parts, frontally or from above, against neutral white or grey backgrounds. His photographs have now become widely known though their use (abuse?) as CD covers and prints.

Bourke White, Margaret
American, 1904-1971

Margaret Bourke White's career as a photojournalist and industrial photographer spanned three decades from 1927 until the mid 1950s. She produced picture essays of industrial processes.

Brandt, Bill
English, 1904-1983

Born in London of parents who were both partly of Russian descent. After working freelance for Paris Magazine in 1930, Brandt returned to England where he photographed for magazines such as Lilliput, Harper's Bazaar, and News Chronicle for which he documented the conditions of England in the depths of the Depression. He photographed English middle and upper class life. He produced many powerful, brooding images.

Cartier-Bresson, Heri

Born in Chanteloup, Cartier-Bresson started painting in 1923 and began to photograph in 1931. After a trip to the Ivory Coast he discovered the Leica, since then his camera of choice. He pursued his photographic career in Eastern Europe and Mexico, later on making films with Jean Renoir, Jacques Becker and André Zvoboda and a documentary on Republican Spain

Capa, Robert
American
1913-

He worked in Germany as a photographer until moving to France in 1933. He covered the Spanish Civil War (1935-37) and the Japanese invasion of China in 1938. In 1942 he was recruited by Collier's Weekly as a photojournalist. He went to Britain and covered the Home Front before moving to North Africa. The following year Capa joined Life Magazine and accompanied Allied troops to Sicily in July 1943.

Callahan, Harry
American, 1912-99

Self-taught in photography, Harry Callahan enjoys a long and influential career, which began in 1938. Although his photographed many subjects he is best known for his many varied and beautiful photographs of his wife Eleanor.

Cameron, Julia Margaret
British, 1815-1879

Julia Margaret Cameron's did not begin photography at the age of 48, presented with a camera as a gift from her two daughters. She then photographed obsessively producing many striking photographs of the famous-many are well known images today.

Cunningham, Imogen
American, 1883-1976

Beginning as a portrait photographer, Cunningham was among the founding members of Group f/64. She excelled in portrait work, photographing for Vanity Fair Her best known work, floral studies from her garden, was produced during the 1920s and 1930s.

Godwin, Fay
British
1931-

Born in Berlin, Germany, her father was a British diplomat, mother an American artist. Educated at various schools all over the world.1966 Became interested in photography through photographing her young children. Became famous for her black and white landscape photographs.1987/90 President of the Ramblers' Association, UK.

Karsh, Yousuf
Canadian, 1908-2002

Karsh is known principally portraits of distinguished men and women in every field of endeavour. His subjects are often photographed in their own environment with dramatic lighting. Karsh is a good place to start when trying to understand portrait lighting.

Kertész, André
American
1894-1985

André Kertész is recognized as one of the world's leading photographers. During a career spanning more than 70 years, He photographs range from portraits to still-life's to photo-reportage, Kertész consistently captured the telling moment. He was an importance influence upon such greats as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, and Brassai.

Lartigue, Jacques-Henr
French, 1894-1986

Photographing for his own family and friends his candid style is common now. But this style belies the large camera and tripod his began with. From a young age he photographed bicycle and automobile races. He early work is a lasting document to a bygone era.

Muybridge, Eadweard
British, 1830-1904

B/W
Eadweard Muybridge was the most significant contributor to the early study of human and animal locomotion. His use of multiple cameras to produce a sequence of images of people in motion added a new dimension to the way people looked at movement. His also travelled photographing in America.

Parr, Martin
British
1952

Born in Epsom, Surrey, Martin Parr has studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic (1970-73) and gained early recognition in Europe and abroad as he won three successive awards from the Arts Council of Great Britain in the late 1970s. His style is unusual, bold and close up. His work should be viewed as projects rather than individual photographs.

Steichen, Edward
American; 1879-1973

B/W
Edward Steichen was one of the influential figures of 20th c. photography. His soft focus pictorial work was well ahead of its time. After the First World War he changed to "straight" well designed photographs. Steichen was responsible for many important exhibitions, including The Family of Man.

Weston, Edward
American, 1886-1958

B/W LAND STILL N
Considered one of the masters of monochrome photography. Weston photographed landscapes, found objects, nudes and notably peppers. People such as Ansel Adams held his regard for lighting and form in high esteem.
