A-Z OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CHEMICALS

I am grateful to Silverprint for permission to use this list. Silverprint (http://www.silverprint.co.uk) supply chemicals and kits as well as many other hard to get photographic items, well worth a visit.
INCLUDED IN THE A-Z OF CHEMICALS:

1. NAME- we have listed the Chemicals by their most common 'working' name. In some instances this is the proper Chemical Nomenclature, e.g. Ferric Ammonium Citrate - as used in iron blue toners and the Cyanotype process. In other cases it might be a Photographic Designation, e.g. Bromide - the name given by photographers to Potassium Bromide, a developer restrainer. Or, it may be a Trade Name, e.g. Phenidone - the name given by Ilford to 1 Phenyl-3-Pyrazolidone, a soft working developing agent whose properties they discovered.

2. FORMULA - we have included this to make the identification and ordering of chemicals easier.

3. OTHER NAMES/DESIGNATIONS - all the chemicals have been listed along with as many other names and designations as we could find for them.
This is intended to be of help for anyone working with old photographic books and almanacs - many of which use rather out-dated nomenclature. Despite this, most of these publications have considerable application today. All these names have been cross-referenced..

4. COMMON USES - against each chemical we have included some examples of its' usage. Many of the chemicals have a much wider range of applications than those we have listed.

SAFETY - Pay attention to any safety details given. When making up solutions do so in the order given in the formula. Add acid slowly to cold water never the other way round. Label all bottles fully and correctly. Do not use containers used for cooking-ever. Be very careful when using powder as they can affect the lungs and eyes. Always work in a well ventilatedd space. Keep all solutions out of reach of children.

Every effort has been make to ensure accuracy, however I can not be held responsible for errors or omissions. This is a complex area, bear in mind that formula may be the most accurate method of ordering a chemical. I have also found errors in chemical suppliers lists: be careful!
